Provides Ontarians secure access to their energy usage data for analysis by third-party agents

In order to provide Ontarians with timely and secure access to their smart meter data, the Ontario Ministry of Energy partnered with MaRS Discovery District to launch the Green Button initiative in the province.  Based on a similar standard being developed in the United States, this initiative aims to define a standard format and platform to allow solution and service providers to programmatically connect to utilities across Ontario in order to securely access energy usage information permissioned by consumers. This phase of the Green Button initiative has been to implement a "Connect My Data" standard in Ontario.

Develop a Reference Architecture for the Green Button "Connect My Data" initiative in Ontario, in order to provide a standard for utilities, application, and service providers to exchange consumer energy data.

Solution delivered

FD Solutions worked with the "Connect My Data" Technical Subcommittee and their partners in the United States to develop a Reference Architecture for the Green Button initiative in Ontario. Key to this project was the creation of a test lab to validate the technical blueprint, which will be used by utilities and vendors to develop Green Button solutions to benefit Ontarians.

Solution details

To assist in the implementation of the "Connect My Data" standard for the Green Button initiative, the Ministry of Energy selected FD Solutions to be the Technical Services Adviser. FD's involvement in the "Connect My Data" project consisted of three distinct phases: requirements gathering, defining a Reference Architecture, and the creation of a test lab environment, with each phase dependent on the successful completion of the previous one.

To assist in the implementation of the "Connect My Data" standard for the Green Button initiative, the Ministry of Energy selected FD Solutions to be the Technical Services Advisor. FD's involvement in the "Connect My Data" project consisted of three distinct phases: requirements gathering, defining a Reference Architecture, and the creation of a test lab environment, with each phase dependent on the successful completion of the previous one.

FD participated in a series of working sessions over four months with the "Connect My Data" Technical Subcommittee, which consisted of stakeholders from:

  • Ministry of Energy
  • Ontario Energy Board
  • Ontario Power Authority
  • Independent Electricity Systems Operator
  • Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario
  • Seven Utilities (including London Hydro and Hydro One)
  • The Clean Energy Institute
  • Representation from solution and service providers, and
  • MaRS

The successful execution of these meetings was a challenge given the number of parties involved and the demanding level of participation required to define the standard. However, effective project management, diligent coordination, focused discussions, and quick turnarounds of documentation allowed the Technical Subcommittee to achieve its goals within tight timelines. The subcommittee also ensured that Ontario's standards align with the NAESB Energy Services Provider Interface standard established in the United States.

The product of these sessions was a Business Requirements Document, and subsequently, a Reference Architecture for the "Connect My Data" standard in Ontario. The Reference Architecture provided the technical blueprint to develop and implement a test lab environment for "Connect My Data" functionality, which in turn allowed for the validation of the Reference Architecture, assessing the suitability of its underlying business processes and rules. Various stakeholders vetted the Business Requirements and Reference Architecture in order to ensure they were comprehensive and consistent with the goals of the initiative.

Project milestones were met on time and with a high level of quality. With the successful completion of the project, the Ministry of Energy can now move forward with the Green Button "Connect My Data" pilot project, furthering the Ministry's accomplishments towards providing Ontarians with secure access to their energy data and making it easier for vendors to provide consumers with beneficial applications and services.
